Consultations On Iraqi Cabinet Continuing

Washington, 25 May 2004 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. State Department has said that the Iraqi Governing Council is consulting with UN special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to appoint members to the interim government that is to take power on 30 June.

Spokesman Richard Boucher said today that an elected national assembly will write a constitution for Iraq that will be the basis for the law of the land.

Boucher said that once the Iraqi interim government takes over it is expected to work in conjunction with U.S.-led military forces to maintain security in the country.

He said the United States would welcome further international support but that it is up to each individual nation to decide how it wants to contribute to Iraq's reconstruction.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
