Former Iraqi General To Lead Al-Fallujah Unit

Iraqi security force to police Al-Fallujah 4 May 2004 -- The United States is expected to officially appoint Iraqi General Muhammad Latif today as the commander the U.S.-backed Iraqi security force in the city of Al-Fallujah.

Latif has emerged as the leading U.S. choice to command the new "Al-Fallujah Brigade" after objections were raised about an earlier choice.

In the United States, the Defense Department has denied that the U.S. military has been slow to respond to reports of abuse of Iraqi prisoners. The U.S. military has so far reprimanded at least six soldiers after photographs were published showing naked Iraqi male prisoners being sexually humiliated and physically abused by U.S. soldiers.

Meanwhile the French AFP news agency quoted an unnamed U.S. military spokesman as saying that the U.S. Army killed four attackers in the north west of the capital Baghdad late yesterday.
