The ministry today said more than 40 people were killed and some 200 injured in a series of car bomb explosions in the northern city of Mosul.

The Arabic television channel Al-Jazeera showed footage of hooded fighters in Baquba who claimed they were followers of Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian-born militant with suspected ties to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network.
A U.S. helicopter made an emergency landing near Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad, but the crew suffered no casualties. The U.S. military has not commented on the cause of the incident.
Violence was also reported in the cities of Al-Ramadi and Baghdad.
