U.S. military spokesman Major Neal O'Brien said the attack also wounded 20 U.S. soldiers and four Iraqi guardsmen. The incident was part of a day of violence and street battles in the city of Samarra, some 95 kilometers north of Baghdad.
O'Brien said U.S. helicopters killed four Iraqi attackers. Medical officials said three civilians were also killed in Samarra.
In other developments, interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi today renounced Iraq's nuclear ambitions.
Allawi's statement came a day after the United States said it had removed 1.7 tons of enriched uranium and other radioactive materials from Iraq last month.
