Forces In Iraq Arrest Son Of Influential Muslim Scholar

2 August 2004 -- U.S. forces today arrested the son of Muthana Harith al-Dhari, the president of Iraq's influential Committee of Muslim Scholars.

A member of the organization, Ahmed Abdul Ghaffur al-Sammarai, said he has no idea why al-Dhari's son has been detained and called for all detainees of the multinational force in Iraq to be released.

Also today, the Iraqi government blamed Al-Qaeda ally Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi for a series of church bombings that killed at least 10 people in the capital Baghdad and the northern city of Mosul.

The attacks, timed for Sunday evening services, were the first on churches of Iraq's minority Christian community since the start of a 15-month insurgency.

The Iraqi government condemned the attacks.

In another development, a U.S. soldier died of wounds suffered yesterday near Samarra, 100 kilometers northwest of Baghdad.
