Iraq's Association of Muslim Scholars said a cleric identified as Sheikh Mohammad Jadoa al-Janabi was killed while entering a mosque in Baghdad's Al-Baya neighborhood today.
Another cleric, Sheikh Hazem al-Zeidi, was gunned down in Al-Sadr City, Baghdad's main Shi'ite neighborhood.
Both victims belonged to the Sunni creed of Islam, which represents a minority in Iraq.
Attacks also targeted the Shi'ite majority.
An unspecified spokesman for the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) today said a party official was assassinated in the country's south.
Also today, explosions claimed at least five lives in Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad, and in the northern city of Mosul.
Meanwhile, a group holding 18 Iraqi National Guard soldiers hostage has demanded the release of a detained member of the militia of radical Shi'a cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Al-Sadr today denied any involvement in the kidnapping of the soldiers and demanded their immediate release.
