Elsewhere, a suicide car bomb attack in western Baghdad today left the bomber and two other people dead.
Also in Baghdad, gunmen today attacked a truck in the west of the city, killing its Kurdish driver.
In the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh, the deputy governor, Khosru Kuran, said that he had escaped an assassination attempt but that one of his bodyguards was killed in the attack.
An Interior Ministry special forces member was also killed in the same area.
Late yesterday, militants attacked Iraqi National Guard forces in the northern city of Kirkuk, killing one soldier and a civilian in the drive-by shooting.
Kirkuk is about 290 kilometers north of Baghdad.
