Spokesman Captain Bill Coppernoll said the gunmen fired from two cars at the civilian buses, which were carrying Iraqis on their way to work at a U.S. military facility.
Coppernoll said another 13 Iraqis were wounded in the attack.
U.S. and Iraqi security forces went to the scene and transported the wounded to hospital.
In a separate incident, a suicide car bomber today drove into an Iraqi National Guard checkpoint in Beiji, north of Tikrit, killing three guards and wounding 18 others. Gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint following the blast.
Earlier, insurgent attacks in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul were reported to have killed at least nine Kurdish militiamen and two U.S. troops.
