Report: 14 Russian Soldiers Killed In Chechnya


5 January 2005 -- An official with the pro-Moscow Chechen administration was cited today as reporting that 14 Russian soldiers and at least three local Chechen troops have been killed in a series of incidents in Chechnya over the last two days.

The source, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said eight Russian soldiers were killed and 15 wounded in a series of attacks around the republic since the night of 3 January.

During the same period, land mines killed five Russian soldiers.

One Russian soldier was killed while trying to arrest an alleged rebel.

Two Chechen police officers were killed in an ambush in Grozny and a bodyguard of the Chechen president was shot dead south of Grozny.

Meanwhile, the Russian military said today that a disinformation campaign is being conducted by Chechen rebels who are spreading information that key field commanders have been killed.
