UN Prosecutor Says Croatia Is Uncooperative

Carla Del Ponte (file photo) 15 March 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Carla Del Ponte, the UN's chief war-crimes prosecutor, today told the European Union that Croatia isn't doing enough to cooperate with the war crimes tribunal at The Hague.

Del Ponte frequently makes that remark, but the fact that she reiterated it today to the EU means the bloc might suspend membership talks with Croatia this week.

The European Commission has threatened to postpone the start of EU membership talks over Zagreb's failure to arrest General Ante Gotovina. The Hague court has indicted him for alleged war crimes.

Del Ponte says members of Croatia's government are helping Gotovina to hide inside Croatia.

Croatia's government has repeatedly said that Gotovina is not in Croatia, and that it is doing all it can to capture the fugitive war-crimes suspect.

Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader today said that Zagreb expects the entry talks to start on 17 March as planned.
