Cyclone Hits Eastern Georgian Village

13 June 2005 -- Emergency service officials said today a cyclone has hit the village of Iormuganlo in eastern Georgia, tearing roofs off houses and injuring 13 people.

Tamaz Apakidze of the Georgian Interior Ministry said that the cyclone yesterday lifted villagers bodily into the air. He said several dozen domestic animals were killed in the storm, which lasted several minutes.

Kilometers of roads and a bridge were destroyed in a deluge in the same region.

Georgy Natsvlishvili, a deputy from the Sagaredzhoisky region, said heavy rains had prevented officials from making a fuller accounting in the area, which lies about 80 kilometers northeast of the capital Tbilisi.
