Russian officials say the disease has killed more than 2,700 fowl in western Siberia and threatens to spread to European Russia. Russian authorities have identified the virus as a strain that can infect humans.
World health officials are concerned that the virus, first identified in Asia, may evolve into one that can spread from human to human. This could set off a deadly worldwide pandemic.
So far, however, the humans infected evidently have caught the disease from infected birds.
