Police officials said the blast occurred in the Diyala Bridge section in the southeast of the capital as people were shopping at a public market.
A second explosion was later reported in the downtown area of the capital. There were no immediate details of casualties.
The blasts come a day after two suicide bombers strapped with explosives killed at least 74 people and wounded scores of others at a crowded Shi'ite mosque complex in Iraq.
U.S. President George W. Bush, speaking to thousands of U.S. soldiers based at an American military base in South Korea today, reiterated that he has no plans to cut the U.S. military presence in Iraq. Bush told the soldiers, "The defense of freedom is worth our sacrifice."
