Serbs Told To Keep Guns Quiet On New Year's Eve

(RFE/RL) 28 December 2005 -- Serbs are being told not to fire guns during celebrations to mark the start of 2006.

Gunfire is a traditional way of welcoming in the new year in Serbia, but, in a joint appeal carried by Serbian media on 28 December, the police, sports clubs, and the United Nations warned about the danger of the custom, pointing out that "every bullet that is fired up must come down."
