Kyrgyz Parliament Holds Special Session

22 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's parliament has been meeting in extraordinary session, after a lawmaker was gunned down in Bishkek.

Bayaman Erkinbaev, who was also a wealthy businessman and the country's Olympic chief, was shot as he arrived home late on 21 September.

Prime Minister Feliks Kulov told lawmakers today that Erkinbaev had told him several days ago he was worried for his life.

"I met with Bayaman Erkinbayev on Sunday [18 September],"Kulov said. "He was very alarmed when he came to see me. He told me whom he suspected [of trying to kill him], and he asked me to name that person if he was killed. And I will name that person to the investigators."

President Kurmanbek Bakiev used the opportunity to call for a purge of law-enforcement agencies, saying corruption and crime are rife.

Erkinbaev is the second lawmaker to be killed in recent past months. He was shot and slightly wounded in a previous attack in April.
