Tajik Court Jails Hizb Ut-Tahrir Members


(RFE/RL) DUSHANBE, May 19, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Authorities in Tajikistan's northern Sughd region have sentenced 10 people to lengthy prison terms for being members of the banned Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir.


The Khujand city court sentenced the men to jail terms ranging from between nine and 16 years.


They were convicted on charges of inciting social discord and calling for the overthrow of the government.
