French President Threatens Nuclear Weapons Against Terrorists

French President Chirac (L) with British Prime Minister Tony Blair (file photo) (AFP) 19 January 2006 -- French President Jacques Chirac has said Paris would be ready to launch a targeted nuclear strike against any state that used "terrorist means" or weapons of mass destruction against France.

Chirac did not, however, cite any specific threat to France.

The French president's comments were part of a speech defending France's costly nuclear deterrent made at the port of Brest, where the country's nuclear submarines are based.
