Observers Hail Georgian Local Elections


President Mikheil Saakashnivli voting in the October 5 municipal elections (InterPressNews) PRAGUE, October 6, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- International observers say Georgia's local elections on October 5 were generally successful, but also noted some shortcomings.


The head of the Central Election Commission, Guram Chalagashvili, says there were serious violations in six electoral districts and that there may be a repeat election in one district.


Preliminary results released so far suggest that the ruling National Movement has an overwhelming lead.
