Suspect In Russian Apartment Blast Detained

23 April 2004 -- A former utility worker has been detained and accused by Russian authorities of causing a recent explosion at an apartment building in the northern city of Arkhangelsk.

The explosion on 16 March killed 58 people and left scores of others injured and homeless.

Arkhangelsk police chief Vladimir Lobanov said a 26-year-old resident of the city, recently dismissed from his job as a utility worker, was taken into custody in connection with the apartment explosion.

Lobanov said the former employee had twice been fired and failed to be reinstated, and alleged that the man apparently sought revenge.

Investigators discovered that a gas cap in the building that blew up had been removed and that caps on valves in neighboring buildings had also been taken on the night of the explosion.
