Danube Breaks Through Flood Defenses In Romania

Flooding in Nikopol, Bulgaria, on April 15 (AFP) April 18, 2006 -- The Danube River broke through flood defenses in parts of southern Romania on April 17, forcing some 3,000 people to evacuate their villages.

Controlled flooding in Romania has failed to contain the rising water, which is expected to peak in Bulgaria and Romania within days.

Swollen by heavy rain and melting snow, the river has hit its highest level in 111 years.
