Yerevan, 29 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - A new political party led by former Armenian Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan is due to hold its founding congress today.
Bagratyan says the new party, called Azatutyun (Freedom), will have a "modern liberal ideology" and represent the interests of property owners and producers.
Bagratyan, an economist by profession, was prime minister for nearly four years before resigning in November of last year. He introduced free market-oriented policies which reversed a decline in prodcution but made him unpopular with many Armenians.
