Russian investigators say the message "Free! Pussy Riot" was scrawled above the bodies of two women who were found slain in the city of Kazan.

The Investigative Committee says that the women -- a mother, 76, and her daughter, 38 -- were apparently killed late last week.

The message appeared in the kitchen near where the mother's and daughter's bodies were found.

The message, the investigators said, was "presumably" written in blood on the wall of their apartment.

Lawyers for the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot have denounced the case as an "abominable provocation."

Three members of Pussy Riot were convicted and sentenced to two years in jail earlier this month for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" over a February protest against President Vladimir Putin that they carried out in Russia's main Orthodox cathedral in Moscow.

Their sentencing has drawn international condemnation.
