How About A Little Chess, Nursultan?

Our Kazakh Service reports that a checkers competition kicked off today in Astana for schoolboys with the name "Nursultan," like the president, Nursultan Nazarbaev. The competition is called "Khan's Checkers in the Khan's City" and is organized by "Astana Magazine."

A witty riposte came from one blogger amid an online discussion of the event.

His post: "Would It Be Possible To Find Nursultans Who Could Play Chess?"

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus.
