DUSHANBE -- The U.S. Defense Department has given $10 million to Tajik authorities to improve security along Tajikistan’s borders with Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.
Ann Benjamenson, a representative at the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, told RFE/RL that the aid "would be used to form local community committees" responsible for identifying and prioritizing community needs, mobilizing community resources, and monitoring the projects' implementation.
Benjamenson said Tajikistan is the only Central Asian country that receives aid from the Pentagon in the framework of this program.
