A reputed crime boss from Kyrgyzstan who was released from prison last year under false pretenses and left for Russia cannot be extradited to Kyrgyzstan.
The Kyrgyz prosecutor-general's office told RFE/RL on August 5 that Aziz Batukaev’s extradition is impossible at the moment as he is facing charges of illegal weapon possession in Russia's Chechen Republic.
Kyrgyz authorities said last month that they are seeking the extradition of Batukaev who had reportedly been arrested in Russia's North Caucasus.
Batukaev, a Chechen, was sentenced to almost 17 years in jail in Kyrgyzstan in 2006 for involvement in several serious crimes, including the murders of a Kyrgyz lawmaker and an Interior Ministry official.
Prison officials released Batukaev in April 2013, saying that he was suffering from leukemia.
His medical report was later found to have been falsified.
