TBILISI -- The Day of the Soviet Occupation is being observed in Georgia on February 25, 95 years after the country was overrun by the Soviet Red Army.
Special events -- including exhibitions, theater performances, and concerts -- were being staged in the capital, Tbilisi, and other Georgian cities.
Government officials and senior lawmakers laid flowers to the memorial complex to Georgian cadets killed fighting against the Soviet invasion that started on February 17, 1921 and ended four days later with the Soviet victory.
Soviet control of the Caucasus nation lasted until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Georgia has commemorated the Day of the Soviet Occupation on February 25 since 2011, with workers across the country given the day off as a national holiday.
