Elementary schools in the Kazakh capital, Astana, have been declared closed for two days due to low temperatures and snowstorms.
The weather forecast said on December 8 the temperature will go down to minus 25 degrees Celsius in Kazakhstan’s southern regions and minus 30 degrees Celsius in eastern Kazakhstan by December 9.
In some parts of Almaty up to 60 centimeters of snow had fallen since December 7.
In neighboring Kyrgyzstan, up to 1 meter of snow had fallen in some areas since December 7, when at least four avalanches were caused by heavy snowfalls in Kyrgyzstan’s southern regions.
The snow has left several villages without electricity.
