Sixteen Chinese Nationals Detained In Kyrgyzstan

Authorities in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, have detained 16 Chinese citizens for assaulting a police officer.

The Bishkek City Police Department's spokesman, Bakyt Seiitov, told RFE/RL on October 2 that the arrested foreigners are facing charges of hooliganism, assaulting an official, and inflicting damage to private property.

According to Seiitov, the Chinese construction workers assaulted a police officer in downtown Bishkek on September 30. They were reportedly intoxicated with alcohol at the moment of the incident.

A court in Bishkek is expected to decide on October 2 if the suspects will be sent to pretrial detention.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
