Romania Fails To Uphold Same-Sex Couples' Rights, EU Court Rules

Romania has failed to enforce the rights of same-sex couples by refusing to recognize their relationships, the European Court of Human Rights said on May 23 in a ruling that will force policymakers to expand protections for the LGBT community. Socially conservative Romania decriminalized homosexuality in 2001, decades later than other parts of the EU, but still bars marriage and civil partnerships for same-sex couples. The ruling says the government breached the European convention on human rights. The government has three months to decide whether it wants to ask the court to refer the case to its top chamber.
