China and Russia are launching scheduled joint naval exercises in the Sea of Japan.
China's state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese army Chief of General Staff General Fang Fenghui as saying the July 5-12 exercises "are not targeting any third party.”
The report added that the exercises are intended to "play a positive role in safeguarding regional security and stability.”
China is sending seven vessels to the drills -- four destroyers, two frigates, and a supply ship.
The Russian Pacific Fleet is sending 11 ships, one submarine, and three planes.
Russia and China also held joint naval exercises last year.
The two countries are expected to hold joint counterterrorism exercises from July 27 to August 15 in Russia.
