Germany's Wintershall Dea oil and gas company has left the Russian market, saying "the aggressive war [with Ukraine] is incompatible with our values" and "ruined cooperation between Russian and Europe." Director-General Mario Mehren said in a statement on January 18 that the government was restricting the operations of Western companies in Russia. Dozens of foreign companies have halted operations in the country or exited entirely since Moscow launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
