Opposition leader Aleksei Navalny has filed a lawsuit contesting the results of the Moscow mayoral election.
A court in the Russian city of Kirov has announced that the appeal trial of opposition leader Aleksei Navalny will take place on October 9.

Navalny confirmed the date on Twitter.

In July, the Kirov court sentenced Navalny to five years in prison.

He was found guilty of embezzling some $500,000 from a local timber company in 2009 when he was an adviser to the governor of Kirov Oblast.

However, he was almost immediately released from jail to participate as a candidate in Moscow's mayoral election.

Many interpreted his release as an effort to ensure that the Moscow mayoral election appeared fair and competitive.

Navalny lost to incumbent Sergei Sobyanin, receiving 27 percent of the vote. He has filed a lawsuit contesting the results.
