Ukrainian forces have launched several attacks on the Russian city of Belgorod, which is located close to the border, since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

A Moscow military court has sentenced two Russian officers -- Colonel Anatoly Bondarev and Major Dmitry Dmitrakov -- to four years in prison for "failing to repulse a surprise attack" by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory. The two kept their military ranks and are allowed to rejoin the military after completing their sentences.
