Mayors of ethnic Serbian municipalities in northern Kosovo say they have received assurances from Serbia's parliament speaker that local and parliamentary elections will be held in Kosovo as well.
The mayors spoke to reporters after meeting with parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic in Belgrade on March 6.
The mayors were quoted as saying Djukic-Dejanovic assured them the elections -- due in late April or early May -- would be held "on the entire territory of Serbia, Kosovo included."
In response, the deputy prime minister of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian-led government, Hajredin Kuci, said Kosovo expected from official Belgrade "European behavior," respect for international agreements, and no interference in the internal affairs of a foreign country.
Serbia -- which rejects the independence Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority declared in 2008 -- was granted EU candidate-country status early this month, but only after Belgrade and Pristina made a breakthrough in an EU-sponsored dialogue.
