Euromaidan Art: Portraits From The Barricades
January 29, 2014 10:35 GMT
Illustrator Oleksandr Kom'yakhov and journalist Andriy Pryimachenko have joined forces to produce portraits of Ukraine's Euromaidan protesters.
1
After the government equated protesters with terrorists, the pair set out to create their own "terrorist" portraits. Here, a woman carries medical supplies to Independence Square; a prosperous Lexus owner contributes tires and gasoline to the barricades; and a handicapped man with no helmet or protection spends a night standing with the protesters amid violent clashes with police.
2
A "terrorist in love" carries a bag to the barricades after tenderly holding hands with his girlfriend on the subway; "Auntie Valya" returns to the square a day after being shot by a rubber bullet, only to be beaten by riot police; a young man nicknamed the "mason" loosens cobblestones for protesters to throw while thanking "Omelya" -- former Kyiv Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko, who paved the city in cobblestones produced by a firm belonging to his son.
3
A musician stops to shovel snow onto the barricades while passing by the square; a priest solemnly prays for God to have mercy on the protesters; and a teenage girl, bundled against the cold, expresses amazement as she gazes at the protests.
