Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has met with visiting Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, telling his Turkmen guest that Ukraine would like to be "fully engaged…to enhance [Turkmen natural] gas exploration and shipment."
Ukrainian officials said ahead of the Turkmen president's arrival on March 13 that purchases of Turkmen natural gas would be one of the main topics in talks between the two presidents.
Ukrainian officials also indicated ahead of Berdymukhammedov's visit that they hoped Turkmenistan would sell Ukraine gas at a price of some $200 per 1,000 cubic meters, about half the amount Ukraine currently pays Russia for gas.
Yanukovych offered his country's services as an export route for Turkmen gas saying the "Caspian and Black Sea route [is] promising."
Yanukovych also offered Ukraine's help in building a second pipeline for Turkmenistan's Malai-Bagtyyarlyk project and said Ukraine was interested in participating in the TAPI (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) pipeline project.
