Tashkent, 14 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- The Uzbek government has established a commission to investigate the cause of a plane crash that killed 37 people, including a United Nations official.
Officials said the Soviet-built Yak-40 passenger plane crashed while approaching the Tashkent airport through thick fog yesterday. There has been no indication of terrorism or foul play.
The plane was flying from Termez, on Uzbekistan's border with Afghanistan. Officials said all 32 passengers and five crew members were killed.
UN officials said Richard Conroy, the senior UN coordinator for Uzbekistan, was aboard the plane. Conroy, who had dual Australian and British citizenship, was an official of the UN Development Program.
