11 November 2004 -- Protesters today peacefully ended a two-day occupation of a Russian regional leader's office.
The protest ended today after a Kremlin envoy assured the demonstrators that a multiple slaying linked to the North Caucasus republic's president's son-in-law will be investigated and those responsible punished.
Fedor Shcherbakov, a spokesman for presidential envoy to the Southern Federal District Dmitrii Kozak, said Kozak persuaded some 50 protesters -- mainly elderly women who were related to the victims -- to leave the office of Karachaevo-Cherkessian President Mustafa Batdyev in the city of Cherkessk.
The protesters blame Ali Kaitov, Batdyev's son-in-law, of involvement in the suspected killings of seven businessmen. Kaitov says he is innocent and surrendered to police late last month.
