30 June 2005 -- Foreign ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Conference have promised more assistance for Iraq as it faces its insurgency.
The assistance was offered in a final statement issued at the end of their three-day meeting in Yemen. In it, the 57 OIC ministers agreed to offer reconstruction help as well as other forms of support such as legal assistance as the country prepares to draft a constitution.
The ministers issued a blanket condemnation of "all acts of terrorism" but they rejected Baghdad's request to explicitly condemn acts of terrorism in Iraq. The ministers said a difference should be made between "terrorism and legitimate resistance against occupation."
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar al-Zebari criticized his colleagues, saying they had failed to adopt a clear position on the Iraqi insurgency.
