6 July 2005 -- Estonia's foreign minister today called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from a separatist region in eastern Moldova.
Urmas Paet, on a two-day visit to the Moldovan capital Chisinau, met with his Moldovan counterpart, Andrei Stratan, and with President Vladimir Voronin.
He said foreign investment in Estonia's economy had grown after the withdrawal of Russian troops, and that Estonia wanted Russian troops to leave Moldova "without delay."
Russia maintains about 1,500 troops in Transdniester, a pro-Moscow rebel province along Moldova's eastern border with Ukraine.
Transdniester broke away from Moldova in 1990. A short war followed in 1992, during which more than 1,500 people were killed.
