12 October 2005 -- Russian trade unions called for a one-day strike across the country today to demand higher wages for workers.
Participating in the action were teachers, doctors, and other public-sector workers.
Several thousand teachers and others held demonstrations in cities in Russia's Far East, including Kamchatka and Sakhalin Island.
Others demonstrations were held in eastern and central Siberian cities.
Workers are calling on the government to use some of the tax revenues from oil to increase wages.
Many of these workers are still being paid less than the equivalent of $100 per month despite rising prices for utilities.
Pensioners demanding higher monthly payments were also among the demonstrators.
