13 October 2005 -- The UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague says it will allow former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj to engage in politics during his provisional release, pending trial.
In a statement posted on its website, the tribunal said it has given the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK)
responsibility to allow or refuse his activities on a case-by-case basis.
One of the judges, Carmel Agius, said in the statement, however, that the tribunal's decision to delegate powers to
UNMIK sets a dangerous precedent and could give the impression Haradinaj is being reinstated as a political leader in Kosovo.
Haradinaj, a senior former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, is considered a hero by many Kosovo Albanians. He faces charges of murder, rape, and deportation of Serbian civilians. He denies the charges. No date has been set for his trial.
