EU Ministers Discuss Bird Flu

18 October 2005 -- European Union foreign ministers hold emergency talks today in Luxembourg on the widening bird flu scare.
The meeting comes a day after Greek Agricultural Ministry officials said an H5 virus had been found in poultry in the Aegean Sea region of Chios.

Tests are now under way to determine if it is the deadly H5N1 strain.

The EU is preparing to ban sales of live birds and poultry from the Aegean Sea region.

The EU has already banned the import of poultry and live birds from Turkey and Romania where tests have confirmed the presence of the deadly bird flu virus.

Tests are also being carried out on birds in Bulgaria and Croatia.
