18 October 2005 -- Iraq's former prime minister Iyad Allawi and other secular leaders have announced a new coalition to run in parliamentary elections in December.
The coalition aims to unite moderate Sunnis, Shi'ites, and other political groups.
The announcement was made on 17 October at an Iraqi Unity Conference in Baghdad.
The meeting was attended by politicians in the present Iraqi government, including Sunni Arab Vice President Ghazi al-Yawer, as well as others outside the coalition - including Tariq al-Hashimi of the Iraqi Islamic Party, which was the sole Sunni Arab party to support the new constitution voted on in
