27 December 2005 -- Iraqi police say maintenance workers in the southern city of Karbala have uncovered what they believe is a mass grave.
A spokesman, Rahman Meshawi, said the remains of women and children were found in the grave in the center of the town.
The remains are thought to date back to 1991, when Saddam Hussein's regime suppressed a Shi'ite uprising in the south. Dozens of such mass graves have been uncovered since Hussein's government was overthrown by U.S.-led forces in 2003.
