Officials disinfect ducks in eastern Turkey on 5 January (epa) 11 January 2006 -- A World Bank official said today that Turkey could qualify for $30 million in aid from the World Bank after an assessment of its needs to deal with the bird-flu virus.

Juergen Voegele, the World Bank’s sector manager for rural development in Eastern Europe, said a joint assessment has come up with a $30 million requirement to fill the needs to improve surveillance, provide veterinary services, and establish a basic human health component to deal with the outbreak.

He said Turkey has the capacity to deal with the current outbreak of the deadly virus, but requires significant funds to do so effectively.
