Chechen Official Supports Polygamy

Ramzan Kadyrov at his father's funeral in 2004 (AFP) 13 January 2006 -- The acting prime minister of Chechnya has expressed his support for legalizing polygamy in the breakaway Russian republic.

Ramzan Kadyrov said allowing men to have more than one wife was "necessary" because Chechnya is at war. He noted that there are from 9-18 percent more women than men in Chechnya.

Kadyrov said men should be allowed to have up to four wives if they are able to support them.
