Three Police Detained For Beating Russian Journalist

(RFE/RL) 8 February 2006 -- Russian media reports say three police officers have been detained in North Ossetia for beating up a Russian journalist.

Olga Kiry, a reporter from Russia's Channel One television, was beaten up when she went to a hospital to try to talk to people injured on 2 February in blasts in casinos in the regional capital, Vladikavkaz. The blasts killed two people and injured at least 20 others.


Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation against one of the officers, who is accused of abuse of office and preventing the journalist from carrying out her work. The three officers were reportedly detained on 6 February.


Russian media reports said North Ossetia Deputy Interior Minister Soslan Sikoyev called Kiry to apologize for the officers' actions.
