June 1, 2006 -- The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today ruled that Russia had violated the rights of a suspected criminal by keeping her in provisional detention in conditions described as "inhumane."
The court said the detainee was kept for more than a year in an overpopulated cell with conditions that provoked "fear, anguish, and humiliation."
The court called on the Russian government to respect the dignity of prisoners.
