Russian news agencies say Musa Nalgiyev, the head of Interior Ministry police in Ingushetia, was killed along with five others when their car came under fire in the town of Karabulak.
Reports say the dead include two or three of Nalgiyev's children.
In a separate incident on June 9, the deputy administration head of a village close to the border with Chechnya died after she was attacked by a group of armed men. Galina Gubina had been in charge of a program to encourage the return of ethnic Russians who had fled the village because of the fighting in Chechnya.
Ingushetia has been the scene of many attacks on law enforcement officials and facilities. Officials believe some of the attacks are a spillover of violence from Chechnya.
